Research published in Oncogene provides hope that the field of epigenetics may be another way of stopping cancer in its tracks.
Particularly aggressive, metastasizing cancer populations were shown to have a unique 'epigenomic' fingerprint, which could be used for targeting cancerous tissue and precision treatments.
As suggested in this study, translating the epigenetic signature of cancer and its effect on malfunctioning cellular behaviour may offer an additional route of attack to a continuously growing arsenal. Epigenetic changes, unlike genetic alterations, are reversible and could offer a route to returning some cancerous tissue to 'normal', or at least to a less virulent variety.
